There's a remarkable survey paper to be written on all the ways we misinterpret our own learning. Lots of memory studies ask participants to evaluate their own learning. Typically they think the most effective condition was the worst.

A common theme: we seem to learn the best when we make mistakes / our incompetence is exposed to us. But we really dislike this, and prefer to feel as though we're not making errors, mistaking that for actual competence.
