I wonder if it's related to: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zeigarnik_effect … Basically, incomplete things stick in people's minds. A movie sets up a conflict and then resolves it. A trailer sets up the conflict but doesn't resolve it, so maybe that makes it stick in your mind more?
There is at research suggesting the Zeigarnik effect works primarily on tasks which people aren't terribly interested in. (IIRC, it was for some notion of "intrinsic interest"). Which suggests maybe not? Still, very interesting suggestion!
That's fascinating. I would've guessed the opposite: that if you don't care about something then whether it's complete or not won't bother you, but if you really care about something then it being incomplete will grate on you a lot.
