Another trailer I love: the trailer for Brave: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZnGNe3SB9Fk … The movie was only so-so.

The last 1 second of that trailer is an absolute masterpiece. If there were Oscars for 1-second shots, it would have deservedly won.

More great trailers: full trailer for Man of Steel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KVu3gS7iJu4 … The Dark Knight Rises: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gFwvozMHR4 … (Yeah, I'm a fan of both Nolans.)

An aesthetic I like is when the use of music is deliberately restricted, and many Chris Nolan associated trailers do that well.

The first 90 seconds of the Furious 7 trailer is marvellous: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Skpu5HaVkOc … I want to meet the genius who thought of that final jump, the car chase as art form.

The Joker trailer is amazing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zAGVQLHvwOY … If there was an Oscar for best performance in a trailer, Joaquin Phoenix would be a lock. (Maybe ever? He's just astonishing here.)

Jack Nicholson was terrific as the Joker. Heath Ledger was much, much better, truly astonishing. I don't know how good Joaquin Phoenix is going to be, but maybe even as good as Ledger(?) Seems very Jungian, some response of our collective unconscious to a powerful archetype

I'm a little torn about watching a movie about the Joker. He embodies chaos and is not supposed to be understood. Why does he kill? Because he does. A movie that explains the Joker seems like a misguided goal.

I had the same initial response. One of the cleverest things about Dark Knight is the way the Joker lies about his past, telling multiple origin stories. But here I think (hope) it will work, because the whole story is about the pathology, not the consequences.

Also, this is at least somewhat encouraging:pic.twitter.com/L7gBQCHFmb

Put another way, you couldn't _merge_ this with Dark Knight. The element that gives DK it's dramatic tension is _incompatible_ with what gives Joker its dramatic tension. But each movie can, I hope, be great on its own.
