When I began writing seriously, I was surprised by the difficulty I had in writing the truth. I don't mean I was dishonest. I mean sentences & paragraphs are weirdly squirrelly things. They rarely say quite what I believe. Sometimes that remains the case even after 20 revisions!

Hemingway had it right: "all you have to do is write one true sentence. Write the truest sentence you know."pic.twitter.com/kor4ddA21R

Reminded of all this by this passage from "Dune". Which is a little scary, as well, as a reminder of the connection between sincerity and charisma. When someone speaks powerful truths, with utmost sincerity, it's difficult to remain neutral.pic.twitter.com/WvpG4i6v1O

@jesswhittles wrote really good post which seems related to thishttps://jesswhittlestone.com/blog/2017/10/23/the-value-in-vagueness … -
Thanks, I enjoyed that, very insightful! I've sometimes thought of teaching a class about dealing with uncertainty and vagueness. It seems to be the key to any kind of creative work. And very helpful in life, too!

There is a tension between brevity and integrity. Many nuanced people I know refuse to write anything short, because they feel it wouldn't reflect their understanding. But IMO, with a lot of effort you can distill into short, true (though incomplete) statements.

I like what Neil Gaiman said: "The moment that you feel, just possibly, you are walking down the street naked, exposing too much of your heart and your mind, and what exists on the inside, showing too much of yourself...That is the moment, you might be starting to get it right."

I was thinking the same yesterday, while translating my thoughts to logic to prove a point. (I'm building a tool for reasoning)

Well said. And I often wish I'd write more not because there is much I want to communicate, but much that I'd like to sort my thoughts about. Writing as an instrument not (merely) for communication, but for clarity. And because Truth comes in layers, writing feels Sisyphean.

And yet so often we think we can find a person's intent, and sometimes their nature, encoded into a spur-of-the-moment comment or tweet.
