It changed my appreciation for what it means to speak the truth. On any complex subject, & often on simple ones, it's hard to do well (other than with near-cached thoughts), not because we're dishonest, but because it's difficult to sort our thinking out to that degree of clarity

Hemingway had it right: "all you have to do is write one true sentence. Write the truest sentence you know."pic.twitter.com/kor4ddA21R

Reminded of all this by this passage from "Dune". Which is a little scary, as well, as a reminder of the connection between sincerity and charisma. When someone speaks powerful truths, with utmost sincerity, it's difficult to remain neutral.pic.twitter.com/WvpG4i6v1O

I've found that writing and organizing bullet point notes helps keep the "truth" more intact. Once we have a hierarchy of such notes, we can carefully choose to expand/aggregate them into prose.

Interesting tip. I find bullet points good for making it clear what my distinct thoughts are. And for applying gradient ascent to those thoughts!

I found this beautiful guide to writing in the classic style helped me to clean up my academic writing, at least: Clear and Simple as the Truthhttps://press.princeton.edu/titles/5543.html …

I wanted to love that book. But unfortunately I didn't get much out of it. I suspect - though I've never figured it out - that there's some basic assumption the authors make that conflicts with some basic assumption I make. I'm sure it's a superb book, though!

Words are insanely lossy, archaic technological artifacts that literally butcher our immensely rich, high dimensional, nonlinear, dynamic, amorphous thoughts & feelings into quantized, one dimensional, linear, static strings. I'm always impressed they've gotten us this far...

(Ofc as performed by a master, in very particular configurations, words can have the power to make us laugh or cry. Rly one of the closest things to actual magic, to move or make someone feel, through what is essentially v specific vibrations in the air, or squiggles on a page.)
