Research in academia is a ~100 billion dollar industry, w/ those dollars in considerable part going to researchers in accordance with the community's judgement of the value of their work. This solves the public goods problem imperfectly, but better than existing corporate models

I understand now. The academia model sounds like it will work. Getting funding should be doable. The organizational challenges of starting this up from scratch are large, but a motivated team or teams could manage it! It's less value-destructive than the ransom model, too
