Wonderful thoughtful article on open source funding, by @feross. We're in an unfortunate state where many companies rely heavily on open source to extract sizeable profits (which in general I am fine with, TBC), but the people writing open source often struggle (this seems bad)https://twitter.com/feross/status/1166924812129722368 …

I’m ending the `npm install funding` experiment I introduced a few days ago. I appreciate the thoughtful discussion and feedback from the community. I shared some thoughts about how the experiment went from my perspective: https://feross.org/funding-experiment-recap/ …

There's a nice phrase @timoreilly uses: "creating [far] more value than you capture". Healthy companies do this, while making a reasonable return. But open source authors often capture almost none of the (enormous) value they can create.

It'd be good to find ways for open source authors to capture more of that value, while retaining all the benefits of open source. @feross's essay is a great thoughtful survey of the problem!

I'm likely missing a lot of nuance coming from a finance background, but an "automated downtime unless a pre-announced funding target is reached" along with "high profile recognition of donaters" looks like it should work?

The likely outcome is abandonment of any such packages by the big cos that use them, destroying one of the main types of value open source creates.

I've heard whispers among maintainers about just such a scheme. If folks get fed up enough, I can see "an exception will be thrown during CI and testing (not in production) as long as a given funding target is not hit". I hope it doesn't come to this

In science the solution is institutions built around a true reputation economy, converting reputation for open revealing of knowledge (in papers) into economic outcomes (jobs). I'd like to see an open source institute (or > 1) do the same, especially for basic infrastructure.

To be clear, that solution in science has many genuine problems. But it works a lot better, IMO, than the current situation for a lot of open source, and is worth trying. Essentially, a university (or research institute), but with open source as the output.

This is a brilliant idea. Would love to help make this happen. What do we need to start? A wealthy benefactor? Or better to find an existing institution to work with?

Has any government ever tried an Open Source Software tax? Implementation details would be tricky. Maybe start with Fortune 500 companies and funds would be specifically earmarked for OSS maintainers.
