There's a nice phrase @timoreilly uses: "creating [far] more value than you capture". Healthy companies do this, while making a reasonable return. But open source authors often capture almost none of the (enormous) value they can create.

Thanks for sharing, Michael. In case it wasn’t clear from my article, I’m also fine with companies using open source to make profits! Indeed my first startup was built on lots of open source. But the ecosystem is burning out maintainers and tons of code is abandoned. Not good!
