I wonder if part of the reason I have such a favorable impression of transhumanism (compared to some of my friends) is that I encountered it before the web was truly graphical.

Curious: how did you encounter it? For me I think it was several transhumanist mailing lists in the mid-1990s.

Yep—I think it was the same. I had run into a few things that I would identify as transhumanist in retrospect, but I think I first got exposed to that terminology on some small websites, and mostly, mailing lists, in the late 90s.

I vaguely remember the transhumanist mailing list, some more techie version with a similar name, the extropians mailing list, polymath list, and a sort of penumbra of half a dozen around those. Plus the writings of Vernor Vinge & several other sf authors & scientists.
