Examples of books (or stories) that you reread years later, & found to be much better? For me: Arrival (Ted Chiang, loved it even the first time); Speaker for the Dead (ditto: loved it at first, even more upon reread); the Great Gatsby (didn't like first time, loved the second)

Yeah, all I remember of Steppenwolf is dreamy angst. Some kind of mystical journey of initiation; it felt quite enchanting at the time.

The second half. First half was a lot slower (to my 19yo self). Second half could not put down. Time to reread!

Glass Bead Game (I felt) changed my life. Then I reread it 5 years later and it felt only vaguely recognisable - it made the same profound impression on me but in completely different ways. Look forward to rereading it again! Steppenwolf > Siddhartha I thought...

I read Steppenwolf and other books by Hermann Hesse in the original German first (I was a student in Germany during the 70s) before I reread it (much later) in English. It does feel different. Maybe I was a lot more idealistic when I was still living in Germany
