"you can only learn doing by doing." Lots of gems in this article, thanks for the link! Have you read Hamming's book "The Art of Science and Engineering : Learning to Learn" ?

That is a great book; I second the recommendation!

Know of any others along the same lines? I've heard of "Letters to a young mathematician" and a few others, always looking for more.

There’s startlingly little like that. Seems so valuable; why not? Someone must have a collection somewhere… If not, you could do a great service by gathering and linking them.

In math, there’s Thurston’s “Proof and Progress”, plus Gian-Carlo Rota’s essays. And Polya of course, although I didn’t personally find him helpful. I’m drawing a blank for science and engineering, although I feel confident I do know of some good “how to” books in both fields

You could check the websites of

There's dozens, though I've never collected them. I quite like Littlewood's Miscellanea. And two of the best bios are Skidelsky on Keynes (get the abridged, "short" version), and Gleick on Feynman.

Incidentally, for the practice of science as recounted by practitioners, see the astonishing oral history site of the AIP: https://www.aip.org/history-programs/niels-bohr-library/oral-histories … The Feynman interview is a great place to start - the interviewer, Charles Weiner, does a wonderful job.

Thank you for reminding me of this site! Only on there 5 minutes and I've already found the original version of a second hand quote from Vera Rubin I really like https://drossbucket.tumblr.com/post/155030032159/have-you-ever-considered-a-career-in-which-you …pic.twitter.com/sdYP7Beu0f
