(Still ordering my thinking about it, & I don't want to offer any hot takes. I'm sure there are many things I will ultimately disagree with. But agreement or disagreement is not the high-order bit in responding to a piece like this!)

It's an interesting piece but way too dependent on recent ideas (like 'legitimate peripheral participation') that are rehashing of 19th c educational debates, e.g. German model universities (like JHU).

Here's a good introduction to Charles Peirce's Metaphysical Club at Hopkinshttps://www.researchgate.net/publication/288181937_The_Johns_Hopkins_Metaphysical_Club_and_Its_Impact_on_the_Development_of_the_Philosophy_and_Methodology_of_Sciences_in_the_Late_19th-Century_United_States …

Just read this. Curious what connection you see between the Metaphysical Club & David's essay? The most obvious connection I see is that it's often such small clubs which seem most inoculated against many of the more negative phenomena David described.

But perhaps I'm missing your connection. Will read the first piece you linked now, if I can find an ungated copy...
