Easily the best essay I've read about the practice of science this year: @Meaningness's "Upgrade your cargo cult for the win":https://meaningness.com/metablog/upgrade-your-cargo-cult …

It's an interesting piece but way too dependent on recent ideas (like 'legitimate peripheral participation') that are rehashing of 19th c educational debates, e.g. German model universities (like JHU).

Good article and thought provoking. Similar to this older one by Sarewitz, which is still my all time favourite.https://www.thenewatlantis.com/publications/saving-science …

Maybe this would be better framed as a description of how science and other human endeavours actually work and not as potential solutions to a set of problems or ways to optimise certain practices? We still get advances. What higher rate of progress could we realistically handle?

Will be happy to see your "cool take". The "legitimate peripheral participation" feels like begging the question. If we knew where to legitimately participate wouldn't we already know the answer, therefore assuming the conclusion? ( I just skimmed, probably missed impt things)

I think the following was said too hastily: "If you do realize that you have lost interest in your field—the fire has gone out of your romance—it may take huge courage to admit that and leave. It’s the right thing to do, though." I wonder if you agree.

Often the fire can be re-kindled, usually when one gets back to doing things for fun again, as one should.

Thanks very much for sharing this. Indeed, it will probably take time to digest all that is in this very interesting post.
