(Still ordering my thinking about it, & I don't want to offer any hot takes. I'm sure there are many things I will ultimately disagree with. But agreement or disagreement is not the high-order bit in responding to a piece like this!)

Not just science. Any intellectual pursuit. It happened to me while tracking down the form of Colerdige's "Kubla Khan". Short version:pic.twitter.com/wHhiuO70gJ

Seems like there are some connections to be made with one of my favorite books of all time, Joseph Henrich, "The Secret of Our Success." https://www.amazon.com/Secret-Our-Success-Evolution-Domesticating/dp/0691166854 … I.e., learning by imitation is fundamental to human advancement, yet it has to be part of a functional community.

Read the whole book, multiple times, but for a flavor see:https://darwinianbusiness.com/2016/02/29/cumulative-cultural-evolution-an-overview-of-joseph-henrichs-the-secret-of-our-success/ …

Yes, but professors gets tenure by playing by the rules and producing generally accepted output. What incentive do they have to go from specialized to general or epistemically open? We reward the rule followers and thus perpetuate rule following.

I suppose this is critiquing the analogy rather than the real point of the post, but the cargo doesn't come to those islands anymore because there's no need to send it there. Likewise, it seems that science jumps forward in spurts driven by necessity.

This comes from a lack of empathy in the social structure, which then isolates the community in its own in-group, with an inability to reach outside to synergize understandings outside their knowing. Intellectual parthenogenesis. Entropy ensues.
