I tend to have the same instinctive response as you to the idea of a govt-run Facebook. But I wish I understood better what works & what doesn't. I really like

I wish I had a better test for understanding which of these things will fail, and which will not. The fact things like the web, TCP/IP, email etc came ultimately from govt programs makes me second guess my instincts.

I’m going back and forth on this too. Where I stand now is: the government can be an *ok* (not great) funder of basic research; and terrible funder of development.

The reason for not great even for basic research is that people tend to look only at the examples of gov funded research, but miss that it’s still a tiny minority of all breakthrough findings, and it’s the most expensive ones.

I’d guess that those were created by scientists who happened to be cashing government checks and not by bureaucrats explicitly trying to be even bigger bureaucrats.
