this is terrible news for the environment
That seems plausible, though it could also go the other way. Repair can have a high environmental cost (eg labor costs are often associated to environmental costs); new stuff can (sometimes) have a dropping environmental cost (more efficient processes etc).
Not disagreeing with you, just cautious. I remember a study showing it was _much_ more environmentally friendly to eat some fruit or other shipped from New Zealand, rather than grown locally, because local growth was so much less efficient it swamped transport costs.
Rereading the above: you're probably right! I was very surprised by that NZ study, and probably over-cautious as a result...
that’s interesting. though thinking of things like new cars and fast cheap fashion it’s rarely a better deal for the environment to constantly be replacing these things. the most environmentally-friendly car is often not a Prius, it’s a used car.
The used car will probably be much lower fuel efficiency, so need to compare the savings from the increased fuel efficiency against the environmental cost of making a new car. Even a modest gain in fuel efficiency will make a big difference over, say, 5 years.
yes, but the resources needed to produce a new car (esp a hybrid) are pretty significant so takes a looong while to have a positive impact. https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/when-used-cars-are-more-ecofriendly/ … https://www.wired.com/2008/05/the-ultimate-pr/ …
Those are very interesting estimates of the fixed environmental cost (12% or 28%, depending on which study in that SciAm article you believe) of a new car. Thanks! Nice ballpark for understanding the fuel efficiency / environmental cost tradeoff.
