Work on causal inference has received much attention over the past 20 years, but it's still very underrated. In a thousand years it will look like the revolution in probability & statistics in the first half of the twentieth century. (Note: I very much doubt the theory has reached a mature form. In that sense, it's also like probability and statistics in the early part of the 20th century.)

Yeah, I definitely think so too. For example, NIH makes requires that all studies "control for certain variables" without realizing that they should add the stipulation "only if these meet the criteria for confounding".

It will take a while for the field to mature and make it into guidelines that affects so much of science!
