A few of my own examples, _not_ drawn from things I work on: I remain very excited about topological matter, new phases of matter, and programmable matter, for reasons I explain here: http://cognitivemedium.com/vme pic.twitter.com/51Cdrgr00p

Work on causal inference has received much attention over the past 20 years, but it's still very underrated. In a thousand years it will look like the revolution in probability & statistics in the first half of the twentieth century. (Note: I very much doubt the theory has reached a mature form. In that sense, it's also like probability and statistics in the early part of the 20th century.)

There's a freaking slug that PHOTOSYNTHESIZES. It doesn't need to eat for months! https://www.livescience.com/6030-surprising-sea-slug-plant-animal.html … https://www.sciencealert.com/this-sea-slug-feeds-on-sunlight-using-photosynthesisImagine … Figuring it how it did this could revolutionize gene therapy. And imagine if we could make it work in mammals! Maybe we wouldn't need to eat???

I'd say the science of human origins seems... weirdly soft-pedaled. Out of Africa: if you asked the average student in high school or college, summarize our best (non-fringe) understanding today, it wouldn't come close to the wiki page, a low bar. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recent_African_origin_of_modern_humans …
