That is, over time, more & more of the objects & systems in our world are having a software layer added. We no longer directly control them; rather their behaviour is mediated. This gives us extra capabilities, but also means a loss of control, ceding it to the software layer

Onteresting thread. I fear that wisdom can be readily bypassed as the US Constitution's right to bear arms is interpreted as everyone should carry assault rifles - an unacceptable position for most other countries.

Considering what they had to work with, the US Constitution & Bill of Rights was a work of genius. Not getting everything right (for whatever aspects you don't like) != not an amazing increment on prior governance systems.

One concept built into this "mediation layer" is optimization. This is even more explicit now than in 2012. In AI, UX or risk mgmt, it's the same central idea. Our optimization tools are great. The problem is ANY powerful enuf application drags them outside the training domain.

Here's a thread describes this phenomenon better than I could. In the last year I've come to see it as a broad social issue.https://twitter.com/TylerGlaiel/status/953845127281197058 …

Something important that I think helped the invention of these ideas was the ability to run "independent experiments": different countries could try different political systems. We need more "independent experiments" to try different principles for software systems.

Yes, much of this we deal with through nascent data rights (often just called privacy, but they also have huge impacts in inter-company relations). The conceptual tools we have to work with control over non-excludable goods are limited and in need of invention.
