How to make software that's self sustaining? Seems like making it a viable company is currently the best approach, it becomes a self- perpetuation engine with a life independent of its creators.

Nonprofits can also have a business model. There are many with hundreds of millions or billions of dollars in revenue. (Not advocating, just a question also on my mind.)
