~80% of the times I go to the website of an organization I've never heard of, I end up going to wikipedia to figure out *what they actually do.* This seems like a problem.

At least in part this seems like a principal-agent problem. What's good for the person designing the website copy isn't necessarily what's good for the company (or for visitors to the site).
