Not sure what to make of the differences in GDP/capita (28k Spain, 31k Italy, 38k France). And besides, I'd expect poorer countries to have more children. Something like poor->less education->more kids. Maybe my intuition is off there.
I think it's also worth pointing out that the poor colour scheme chosen for the map could be slightly deceiving here. There is no reason for this to use a diverging colour scheme, and the two endpoints are almost indistinguishable to boot.
