Ebooks/etc for technical authors have a much healthier curve, although for the amount of risk/business savvy ventured doesn’t earn a huge premium over software engineering. (Can be done from anywhere though, which many friends take advantage of.)

Bring back patronage?

I'd love to hear how you think it might work! Historically, patronage has done some amazing things, but has very limited scaling capabilities. Arguably, the biggest success has been universities. Which, er, as you know have some shortcomings

Put another way: giving away a book in a hot field like deep learning is probably a good loss-leader for the author. But it wouldn't work for Jane Austen to fund her novels. And the latter is a hell of a lot more important, IMO (or pick your own example to interchange)
