Pointing out minor infelicities is a way for people to show they're paying attention and they know about the subject. Probably men, right? This is how men bond - establishing themselves in the pecking order.
Interesting observation! I'm not sure, but it's a fun lens to think about. With me, anyway, it's a way of anti-bonding: I will often actively avoid such people.
BTW, just to be clear, this is not a comment about criticism in general. Alan Kay has made a useful distinction between good and bad criticism. Good criticism is, of course, context-dependent, but it's usually a generous, insightful part of supporting a larger creative project
Maybe some people just want to tear things down. But I think there are also some who would love nothing more than an acknowledgement from the famous Michael Nielsen: "yes, you're right".
