I wonder if it's based on psychological self-trickery: if you're feeling down on yourself, you can temporarily elevate yourself by criticizing someone who actually did something, & then feel superior to them. Of course, it's fictional you versus real them, so an empty feeling

Tbh I think it's less about power and superiority and more about fear response vs. change/uncertainty. Certain schooling & parenting approaches probably lead to negative response in the face of difficulty. Complaining is like a form of immediate regulation to abate that.

Yeah, that seems plausible too. Especially if you feel like you have no ability to act yourself. "Elon should do X" easily becomes "Elon is bad for not doing X". (Surprised how many people criticise him for, for instance, not solving Flint's water problem.)
