Fun little toy experiment studying the effects of isolation, intermittent connection, and full-on connection on problem solving. Intermittent connection works pretty well - and results in both a great deal of exploration _and_ knowledge sharing: https://www.pnas.org/content/115/35/8734 …pic.twitter.com/xJzuQfrfSW

Huge deal if generally true! Have always wondered about this.

Reminds me of ideas in GG&S about the spread of innovation across societies. Interconnectedness is key for global innovation. When populations become isolated they lose valuable tools and technology within a few generations. Perhaps there is a Goldilocks level in societies too.

Good stuff! Reminds me of work @ElenaMiu1 did with our contest data (https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-018-04494-0 …). FOMO makes people neglect their valuable idiosyncrasies. Isolation sucks away their motivation.

        > We show that, within each contest population, performance increases over time through frequent 'tweaks' of the current best entry and rare innovative 'leaps' Was there any insight into what predicts a 'leap' thinker amongst a sea of 'tweakers'?

Fascinating. I wonder if I like this study so much because it makes so much sense to me! I especially appreciate studies that show that full transparency is not always the best option, since that isn't intuitively obvious to many—and has important policy implications.

Why I like contests as way to fund tech research. Teams work on their own in secret but then later learn of others solutions. Wash, rinse, repeat.
