I was born in Monroe, Michigan in 1979. My dad took a contract gig out there on a power plant as a mechanical engineer. A lot of industrial and manufacturing.

Compared to SF, any one industry in NYC can decline and the city will still be fine. Look at asking rents in Manhattan post financial crisis - peak to trough was just a small dip compared to .com implosion effect on rents in SF.
