Not meant to be adversarial - I'm genuinely very curious. But getting past that line has been a major change in my life over the past 3-4 years. I wrote a tiny bit about it:pic.twitter.com/XDz0l7N54S

Thanks for asking. Great question, and totally welcome. Here's a much longer and way more personal answer than you probably bargained for.https://twitter.com/ShriramKMurthi/status/1130270213843427328 …

Here's some context for my comment. My Indian educational system put a lot of store in rote learning. Being able to memorize a large quantity of information accurately, index it well, and reproduce it accurately conferred significant advantages. »

If you make it through that thread, you'll hopefully see actually very much share your perspective. We just tip the weights a bit differently, though I suspect we want to end up in the same place.

Same here. Over the course of last few years, I've realised the importance of 'names' as shorthands for bigger chunks of information.

Names do matter no doubt. But it depends on what you're looking for. Feynmann's quote is an antidote to getting stuck in understanding names and not going deeper into what it actually is. And understanding something is subjective too - linguist v ornithologist

What kinds of things do you use Anki for? I've used it off-and-on for years now but without much rigor or sustained use.
