Australia's (really bad) former Prime Minister Tony Abbott was just voted out of his formerly ultra-safe seat. Surprisingly to me, exit polls suggest the number one issue in changing voters' minds was climate change.

We're seeing that in the UK as well. Climate change has doubled from from 12% to 24% as most important issue in last year.

But he lost his seat to a conservative independent. It doesn’t change much at the national level.

i think what we're seeing in australia is the swing of rightwing populism to populist environmental/global warming concerns. in canada, the green party are talking as if they'll form the next federal government. the only possible means to achieve this result is by populism.

In sum, though, Australia elected a "Coalition (that) remains deeply regressive on climate action"https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2019/may/11/morrison-says-hes-in-command-of-the-show-but-theres-a-far-bigger-force-at-play …
