I saw some classical music productions in New York, and audiences started clapping before the music even stopped, not giving any chance to emotionally reverberate in the second of silence after the closing notes. What's up with this?

Michael Tilson Thomas, our conductor in San Francisco, has taken to holding his hands up at the end of pieces, lowering them to his side when it is OK for the audience to clap. This is very helpful in quieting audience members who think there is a prize for being first to clap.
