Something that bugs me a lot about story is that it's _about_ something. Something I've heard several authors comment on is that every element of a book relates to every other. A word serves a sentence serves a paragraph serves [etc] serves the overall narrative.
In this, story seems much like a scientific theory - every element counts & is part of a whole. But people often don't imbue their own lives with meaning in the same way. In this way, story seems more like science and less like humanity to me.
