Of all the source code that exists today, if you could only preserve 1000 pages for future generations, what would it be? What's the most important and irreplaceable ~100,000 lines of code on earth?

Awesome question! McCarthy eval, Apollo 11 OS, NLS, Smalltalk-72, a TCP/IP implementation, a simple browser, maybe parts of STEPs, maybe the simplex algorithm? All tiny, all huge bang-for-the-buck. An effort on actually doing this here: http://www.vpri.org/pdf/tr2015004_cuneiform.pdf … cf

Oh, Gypsy (or Bravo) and VisiCalc. Maybe Space War and Braid (indulgent, but at 70k lines it's not too large) too. Don't know how beautiful/instructive many of these implementations are, unfortunately.
