I find I often hesitate to share links like this. The essay is easy to criticise, & when I share such things there is often a lot of (easy to anticipate, & thus dull) middlebrow & lowbrow criticism. If you're tempted to such a criticism, try riffing on the idea creatively instead
That stuff - when someone makes a surprising connection or analogy or draws out an unexpected insight - is absolutely magical!
It's the playfulness. When someone keeps it into adulthood and combines it with rigour though.... Another type of magic.
The common saying about the biggest lie we tell ourselves as adults (that we know what we are doing, who we are or the purpose of our existence) gets in the way of seeing how the purity & wisdom of the child is all we ever really need to thrive.

I think beasides “learning how to talk”, one learns how to “compartmentalise” as well - so making a surprising connection, like you mentioned, becomes rarer. I guess there’s also the point of: the meaning adults extract from those poems vs what the children actually meant...
