I'm curious how this correlates with Party ID. Over the same time period people are increasingly reluctant to associate themselves with a party label, despite strongly partisan behavior. Rugged individualism is strong in our culture, but doesn't fit natural social human behavior.
That was also my first thought, the acceleration around 2005 also lines up with the advent of social media.
The rise of the web is surely a major contributor. Think about being an atheist in a small Texas town where everyone is Baptist or Catholic (even a big city like Dallas). Suddenly, you can connect to a newsgroup or forum or chatroom - and you learn that you are NOT the only one.
