The jump in no religion happened after the cold war. Perhaps people were feeling more free to express atheism after communism was defeated?
Maybe. Another possibility is that the web (&, more broadly, the internet) started to rapidly grow in the early 1990s. I suspect reading the original sources (from GSS and Pew) would help a lot here!

In my experience it seems to be a bit of the opppsite. I’ve seen a lot of young people who are fully into it for no apparent reason. I think the way it’s promoted has evolved a lot faster than we think.
