I think a similar preference cascade is coming for universities.
Why? (Not an argumentative why, just a curious why. This is a claim often made, but usually badly argued - I'd love to see a good argument for it.)
It's unclear to me that this is happening in non-tech industries. Now I think tech is increasingly rising in scale and importance so that may be enough. But I see no signs of law, finance, etcetc moving this direction
More generally, I wonder if this is historically seen in other very high growth industries, where the demand for labor greatly exceeds supply.
Yeah, I do wonder if it's primarily a function of demand/supply imbalance and feedback loop on performance
Incidentally, @patio11, if you do write up some thoughts, I'd be curious about your take on US versus non-US. The fees and student debt situations are, of course, very different across countries, and the US is rather unusual.
