Well, you were right, I did the algebra but don't feel enlightened. Now I'm dying to understand. Will this be covered in the next two essays? Or should I look elsewhere? (where?)
Thanks Joel. No, it won't be (directly) covered. It's one of those things where you accumulate enough other knowledge and it gradually becomes more and more obvious what's going on.
I can't point to a short, self-contained description which makes it obvious. Someone who'd really mastered chapters 2 & (particularly) 4 of my quantum computing textbook would probably have the tools to see it pretty easily. But that's vastly more effort than it's worth.
And, to be honest, I'm not 100% sure it's even quite true - it's a long time since I've looked at chapter 4.
