I can easily sink 80 hours/week into work I deeply enjoy. I can’t imagine doing so w/o the pleasure. Sometimes our values flow automatically from the particulars of our psychology. Makes it hard to imagine any other way. Seems like that’s what’s happening on both sides here.https://twitter.com/juliagalef/status/1103737522184609792 …

This, below, is also how I feel when people say things like "I only trust the political views of people with children, because they actually have a reason to care about the long-term future, unlike non-parents" (via Reddit) pic.twitter.com/dGDQIKj3so

As an additional note, I don’t love disagreeing in a quote tweet because it can look like an attempt to dunk. I like Julia’s comparison a lot, it just pushed me in the opposite direction.

Note my claim wasn't that the childless are more likely to help humanity. Claim was that it's absurd (& a little concerning) to claim only parents care about the future of humanity. If I was betting on the effect of parenthood -> altruism, I'd be unsure:https://twitter.com/juliagalef/status/1103826631666294785 …

In any case, this is an empirical question. Personally, if I was going to bet on whether parents vs. childless people are more likely to do things to help future generations (controlling for, e.g. socioeconomic status) it would be a tough call.

Like, I totally believe there are many people whose caring about the future stems from concern for their kids. I just raise my eyebrow at the claim "The only reason someone could have to care about the future is if their kids will be affected by it."

Vicarious emotion is a wonderful characteristic of humans. *Everybody* cares about children. We all used to be children, know children, and many of us have children. It's one of the universals.

I've met people who claim to simply dislike children. Not people I easily empathize with along other axes, but it's an existence proof. All were pretty misanthropic, IIRC, so maybe they just disliked people.

I know at least one very warm and friendly person who says she really dislikes kids.

Are we here equating not liking children with some form of hatred (or ill wish) toward mankind, or simply someone being annoyed on a 15 hour flight? (I meant more in a children = future sense. As a way of dealing with individual mortality.)

Oh I'm sure she would says she "cares about" children in the sense that she wishes they have flourishing lives (which was maybe your sense of the word). Just that she doesn't enjoy them (which was maybe Michael's sense of the word)

Makes sense. Guess this doesn't contradict the vicarious virtues: even an outlier who doesn't enjoy the company of children (or anyone else) will be unlikely to wish them ill. (Saw an interesting comment to @paulg raising this Q: most genocidal dictators did have kids.)

having kids is just surprisingly intense. i don’t think it changes ones values or politics, and agree that implying the childless are suspect in theirs is dumb, but you hear X on the news and imagine it was your kid, and you just start to cry. it’s an error, but it’s easy, to
