His work on organic molecules in space and more importantly on the greenhouse effect on Venus is well known. Nuclear winter was scientifically iffier. He was not among the top ranks of scientists, but to dismiss him as a "nobody" was both absurd and cruel on Teller's part.
Sagan's publications are very interesting to look through: https://scholar.google.com/scholar?hl=en&as_sdt=0%2C5&q=carl+sagan+&btnG= … Lots of very influential research publications in a variety of areas. Even if he'd never done any popularization he'd still have been an extremely accomplished scientist (though obv not as famous).
