I’m hopeful places like YCR and CZI might be less encumbered and come up with more creative solutions. I’m hopeful that Octant will be able to push some of those things forward as well.
I've zero sympathy for the "hard to do unilaterally" argument. I do understand the issues, including how they're construed within old-fashioned research institutions. That's why I quit my tenured job.

Agreed. But many great things still about university research and things that help it along will be good for the world and worthy of effort. I love the ideas behind distill for instance and cs is definitely the place that’s pulling us all forward.

True. When I get grumpy about academia, I remind myself of people like UCLA's Judea Pearl and Terry Tao. It's worth a _lot_ of silliness in our universities.
