"First" is a word in a press release that just makes me think your result is just that you beat others to the line. Which is great! But we would have gotten there eventually? #ratrace #phdrace #tenurerace

Yes. The very best design, art, music, and writing has something of this character. This is one thing I find particularly interesting about interface design.

I agree that this is true. Imagination spans a huge space. I had meant scientific results, as I assume the original post referred to, and had meant the broad implication of the result rather than precisely the way it is formulated in a paper as this may also have many variations.

I’m sure we agree that science can be just as creative as art and design! The use of ‘first’ in a paper has negative connotations because it implies that the work focuses on box-ticking within a recognised roadmap. I always feel a bit deflated when I see it in the abstract.
