Just waking up but it looks to me that you're out by 3 orders of magnitude. 1 GT = 1e12 kg, = 6e11 m^2 year at 1.5 kg/m^2/year, = 6e5 km^2 years.

OTOH 1.5 kg/m^2/year doesn't seem like all that much so I wonder whether that figure is out. Also, what was Azolla (a freshwater plant) doing growing in the Arctic Ocean? Curiouser and curiouser.
