Simultaneously having a reasonable conversation with Saikat Chakrabarti by email while a series of angry people (presumably less informed than him about Ocasio-Cortez's policy) call me names on Twitter makes it clear how useless Twitter is for talking about anything complicated.

I wonder if there is something halfway between Twitter and email. I don't know what that would even look like, but there may be; I suspect only a small part of the space of possibilities for forums has been explored.

My favourite social network ever was FriendFeed. It had something of this flavour.

Classic message board is still my favorite. Threading, asynchronous, and multi-party. Don’t need to reinvent.

The question of exploring the larger design space is still incredibly interesting, IMO. Hard to believe we're in anything other than the very earliest days of understanding social software.

Perhaps don’t need to reinvent was too harsh. That said, for basic text I'm not sure how much different we need to be. New medium (voice, video, etc) certainly makes you think there is a new way forward.

I thought emoji would fail; I was wrong (& it's changed text). I thought Wikipedia would fail; I was wrong (& wikis are an amazing new social form for text). I'll bet there are dozens of similar or larger changes to basic text waiting to be discovered!

True. Tho we may be talking about two different elements. Question I guess is how separate the Forums (structure) are from the medium.
