I wonder if there is something halfway between Twitter and email. I don't know what that would even look like, but there may be; I suspect only a small part of the space of possibilities for forums has been explored.
My favourite social network ever was FriendFeed. It had something of this flavour.
Were there aspects of FriendFeed that are no longer available anywhere now?
I suspect the most important is that the creators (Paul Bucheit, Bret Taylor et al) were highly active users who understood their own site. Not true of Twitter or Facebook AFAICT. It meant lots of features of FF seemed tuned really well.
Classic message board is still my favorite. Threading, asynchronous, and multi-party. Don’t need to reinvent.
The question of exploring the larger design space is still incredibly interesting, IMO. Hard to believe we're in anything other than the very earliest days of understanding social software.
It's hard to know if friendfeed would have been any better at scale. Unfortunately social media seems to elevate our worst voices and feed our worst impulses. Twitter is like a game where you get 1 point for being fair and thoughtful, and 1000 points for character assassination.
If someone could figure out how to invert those rules, it might be the most important thing that anyone could do at this point in history. It seems to be a very hard problem though. Connecting everyone online just made them that much easier to hack...
The very awesome MetaFilter has a two-pronged approach: it charges $5 for joining, and it moderates discussions very actively and with a lot of transparency.

FriendFeed 
was unique & magical. One of my favorite concepts/sites/application -- EVER [IMHO]. Not just social networking top list. It just made sense. info flowed. Plus, GNIP, APIs, GraphQL, SOLID, protobuf would have naturally decentralized it into the nets fabric.
