I think I have some sort of subconscious belief that humans have been getting smarter throughout history - better at recognizing abstract patterns in general and holding more complicated strategies in their head. Is this a real thing?

The Flynn effect: a rapid increase in IQ through most of the 20th century. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flynn_effect … IQ tests are periodically renormed because of it.

The effect is extremely large - eg a 14 point gain over 66 years in Britain.

That's why I wrote 20th Century. It still seems to be contentious why it happened, & why it's slowed down or stopped.
