I think I have some sort of subconscious belief that humans have been getting smarter throughout history - better at recognizing abstract patterns in general and holding more complicated strategies in their head. Is this a real thing?

Not sure over what kind of timescales Aella is thinking here (maybe much longer than ~100 years) but Rick Nevin makes a decent case that the Flynn effect is mainly due to decreased lead exposure which is in general a pretty recent phenomenon.
