It's worth remembering the point of reading a manual: it is not to remember everything that is in it for later but to later remember 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 something is in it.

I've wondered about this. There's a kind of remembering-by-reference rather than remembering-by-value. The value seems to be that it increases the speed with which you can map an area. OTOH, in creative work fluency is valuable, and that (eventually) requires remembering-by-value
