Hmm...I definitely hated maths until I learned it outside of school, but I loved English at school, in part because of a few great teachers who treated us like humans, and I still love reading and writing (although I tend to analyse fewer Shakespeare plays :P)...
Funny coincidence: I was bored by Shakespeare (see above) until one of Australia's best Shakespearian actors visited the school, & spent a few hours riffing on Shakespeare w/ the students. He loved it & was a master of it. Made it easy to see the best of Shakespeare was amazing

Made a big difference that he was just doing this voluntarily. I often felt oppressed by school, but it's hard to feel too imposed on when the guy up front has freely taken time out of his day to show you something he's amazing at & loves.
