Also there's lots of value in it being easy for the reader to refer back to. If it's embedded in the writing it's less awkward at first, but it's harder to index on later if you want to rediscover it.

One thing I've always appreciated in fiction (especially science fiction) is when the author goes out of their way *not* to define things up front, but lets you piece it together from context. Gibson, Miéville are especially good at this.

Something I'm sure I've seen (but don't offhand recall) is a story where you all of a sudden realize, "hey, my heroes - the people I'm reading about and rooting for - are actually the villains here", without the author ever saying so.
