Incidentally, years ago I looked at the careers of older theoretical physicists to try to understand why some 70 yos remain productive, while others don't. The number 1 signal I found: the productive 70 yos all had mentors - meaning people they seriously learn from & collaborate

How do you find younger mentors? I can imagine it might seem gauche to discuss the relationship as such, so do you just ... sidle into it? Asking for myself.

I find people whose work I admire, and make friends with them. That's rewarding on its own, and I learn a lot; sometimes it turns into collaborations, and inevitably I then learn immense amounts.
